After the original trilogy (2000-2006), which was set in the near future, 2011's X-Men: First Class went back to the 1960s to look at some of the characters' first encounters. The film ambitiously combines two sets of actors from two different X-Men timelines. And, of course, there's a time-travel element to it, which just completely opens up to a very mind-bending experience.'' But yeah, it's the story of the creation of the Sentinels and what that does to the family that is the X-Men. ''Anybody who knows the comic books probably knows more of the history of it than I do. ''There's somebody from Fox with a Taser standing next to me right now,'' he says with a chuckle. In the comic-book source material, Trask is the man behind the creation of an army of robots called Sentinels that hunt down mutants - but Dinklage is not allowed to tell us much about the film version.

In this, the seventh in the mutant-superhero series (including Hugh Jackman's Wolverine spin-offs), he plays a military scientist named Bolivar Trask.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is Dinklage's most high-profile film role. Now I have no idea … I'm just as curious as anyone else.'' ''I knew to a certain point when I signed on - I knew to … what I just finished shooting last year. ''George Martin hasn't finished writing the series of books that we're basing the show on, so I don't know if my character lives or dies or what the future is for him. ''Anyone who watches the show knows that a lot of the characters who you think are gonna be around for a while can die in the next moment,'' he says. ''They didn't care how loud we played our music or what music we listened to - they were very encouraging.'' That's just bad writing.''ĭinklage grew up in New Jersey, the second son of an insurance salesman and an elementary school music teacher who ''were always very supportive of the arts'', he says.

I'm just not attracted to scripts where that's the primary definition of the character. It's just a piece of who you are, not the whole puzzle. ''I'm not defined by size and anybody with my condition will tell you the same thing. One of the reasons his role in X-Men: Days of Future Past appealed was because it was ''not written to be a dwarf''. Speaking in the lead-up to his visit to Melbourne for the premiere of his latest film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Dinklage says that if a role calls for a dwarf and is as well-written as Lannister or McBride he'll happily take it on, but ''there are a lot of roles that I play that has nothing to do'' with his size.

Whether set in a medieval fantasy or futuristic sci-fi, Peter Dinklage commands the screen, big or small.ĭinklage was born nearly 45 years ago with achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism, but has done his damnedest to make sure this didn't get in the way of his craft.
